What is WAMITAB and CIWM?
COTC qualifications are delivered through WAMITAB – the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board, now part of the CIWM (Chartered Institution of Wastes Management), the UK’s leading professional body for resource and waste professionals.
These qualifications prove that a person has the technical knowledge and practical competence to manage permitted waste operations safely, legally, and in full compliance with environmental regulations.
There are multiple levels of WAMITAB qualifications, each matched to the type of waste activity your site is authorised for — from simple waste storage to hazardous treatment, transfer stations, and specialist operations like end-of-life vehicles or clinical waste.
To meet your permit conditions, the right qualification must be held by a named individual who is physically present on site for a minimum number of hours each week — this is your Technically Competent Manager (TCM).
